GAZIETA LIETUVISZKA
(The Lithuanian Newspaper), the first Lithuanian newspaper in the United
States, published weekly in New York from 1879-1882. The newspaper was
published by Mykolas Tvarauskas (Mikas Tvarauckas), who emigrated to the
United States after the 1863 uprising in Lithuania, where he was a village
school teacher and participant of the uprising. The first issue of the
newspaper appeared on August 16, 1879. After 16 issues publication ceased
because it had only 132 subscribers. It was revived in 1881 and 14 issues
were published. The last issue appeared on April 9, 1882. The newspaper was
unsuccessful because of its propagation of the old Lithuanian-Polish union
and the lack of interest in the problems of Lithuanian immigrants settling
in the United States.
